Arrhythmia is a medical condition that causes an abnormal heart rate. Common signs of arrhythmia are when the heartbeat feels too fast or irregular, and can include chest pain, dizziness, and fainting.

Different types of arrhythmia in New Jersey exist based on the origins that cause them. You may be diagnosed with something as serious as atrial fibrillation (a type of arrhythmia) after having a risk factor such as a heart attack or high blood pressure previously. Some people will develop an episode of atrial fibrillation that may only last for seconds or minutes before returning to their normal heart rhythm.

If your heart is beating irregularly, it can throw off your blood pressure and may lead to other health problems. To help keep the heart in a normal rhythm, there are many different types of treatments available. You should ask your doctor about the safest way for you to manage arrhythmia based on your condition.

Signs of Arrhythmia and Causes

Arrhythmias have many different symptoms depending on the type. Some examples of normal heart rhythms include when a heartbeat feels like it skips beats or races very fast, while an arrhythmia feels like it is pounding too fast or irregularly. Some of the most common types include:

Premature atrial contraction (PAC) – When the heart contracts too early, this can cause the pulse to feel very fast and weak. If you have premature atrial contractions, you may also feel lightheaded or dizzy, while a faster heartbeat can make it hard to breathe.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) – When your heart beats faster and irregularly, you may get symptoms such as feelings of weakness in your arms or legs. You may also feel dizzy when walking or standing up, faint when you are lying down, and experience chest pains. Many people will also hear an abnormal sound in their heart beat when they have atrial fibrillation.

Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT) – When the heart beats too fast, you may hear a very fast heartbeat. You can also feel dizzy, lightheaded and have trouble breathing. Some people will feel like their heart is pounding or racing too hard.

Other types of arrhythmia include atrial flutter and ventricular tachycardia. The most common cause of an arrhythmia is from an electrical problem where the heart starts to beat faster than it should be. This can be due to a problem with your heart’s electrical system that causes it to have abnormal impulses that trip and interrupt the normal heart rate.
